NEW JERSEY NETS!

January 14th, 2010 by Planet Chocko

Woe is me…the NJ Nets got slaughtered like a lamb last night against the Boston Celtics. I keep telling myself they have good players with lots of upside in them with horses like Devon Harris, Brook Lopez, Yi, Chris Douglas Roberts, & Courtney Lee, but I’m beginning to lose firepower defending them. The Nets record to date is 3-35. Though, the NJ Net Dancers haven’t lost a beat! As “Debarge” said…”Feel the beat of the rhythm of the night, dance until the morning light, Forget about the worries on your mind you can leave them all behind…”

Yankees & Rocco Baldelli?!

January 14th, 2010 by Planet Chocko

The Yankees are still in the hunt for a left fielder! We pretty much know a thumper type, high salary tenured left fielder is out of the question now, but what about taking the chance on Rocco Baldelli? He has power, great speed on the bases, & plays a savvy outfield, but his caveat is being injury prone in the past. Baldelli signed a $500K contract last season with the Red Sox so the Yanks can sign him with similiar numbers & still probably have enough to sign Jerry Hairston,Jr . With the platooning of Hairston, Baldelli, & Gardner, this trio would seem to make a decent 8th or 9th option in the lineup with speed all around. Maybe, the off season training & the reflection of times has made Rocco Baldelli into a more hardy player. I’m just trying to be optimistic here, kids! Personally, I hope Brett Gardner gets a chance to start in left field indefinitely until he shows signs of struggling at the plate. I think Brett Gardner’s hard nose, get your uniform dirty, formula 1 – style of play would add another dimension to the Bronx that other teams would have to contend with.
Spring Training in little more than a month, folks!

Gang Green!

January 13th, 2010 by Planet Chocko

The NY Jets entered a dance of playoffs that they weren’t supposed to be in! Now, these unwanted mofos are crashing the party in an ugly dress! The Jet’s don’t have anything to lose & are playing like a loose goose ready to lift off like a swift Hawk to elude the lightning from the Chargers! Can the Gang Green clan fit those slippers on to play the role of a hideous looking cinderella? I might be eating my words in less than a week, but I’m feeling sky high right about now! Eerie Von signed and performed at Generation Records

January 12th, 2010 by planetchocko

Photobucket
On January 8, 2010 Eerie Von was at Generation Records (210 Thompson St., NYC) to celebrate the release of his book titled “Misery Obscura.” The book is an epic look at the history of the legendary punk bands, the Misfits, Samhain and Danzig through the camera lens of Eerie Von. I first heard of the Misfits after Metallica covered “Green Hell” and “Last Caress” for their EP “Garage Days Re-Revisited” which I bought on cassette back in the late 80’s. At the time, Metallica would always be seen in videos and photographs wearing Misfits shirts and that got me really curious too. I went to the local mall and bought a cassette of “Walk Among Us” rushed home and played it on my boombox. After playing 20 Eyes, I Turned Into A Martian and All Hell Breaks loose, it was a wrap..I was instantly hooked. Walk Among Us had lyrics and music inspired by horror movies and catchy punk songs with amazing vocals. I had never heard anything like it. 1987 was a long time ago, and to this day that album is still one of my favorites and the horror punk band from Lodi, New Jersey during the Glenn Danzig-era will always have a special place in my little punk rock heart…along with the Ramones, Black Flag, Minor Threat, Bad Brains and The Dead Kennedys of course!
Back to the book…Misery Obscura is a photographic journal by a highschool friend of members of the Misfits who was casually asked to shoot the band one day. Eerie Von did a great job documenting the band, but would later become the bass player for Samhain after the Misfits broke up in 1983 and would also play bass in Danzig. The book has lots of excellent photos of the Misfits on stage (my favorite shots), flyers, memorabilia and candid moments as well. The photos are also accompanied with stories and and recollections by Eerie who provides an interesting perspective in being in the band Samhain and witnessing the rise of the heavy metal juggernaut known as Danzig. The 160 page coffee table sized Misery Obscura book released by Dark Horse is definitely a must in your horror punk collection. Lyle Preslar (Minor Threat) and Mike D’Antonio (Killswitch Engage) both wrote forewords in the book and joined Eerie at Generation Records for a couple of songs. Eerie sang 2 country songs he wrote titled “lay the blame” and “please don’t wake me” accompanied by Lyle on the guitar and Mike on bass. The boys were joking around and shared some stories with the crowd before playing Samhain’s “To Walk The Night” and “Killer Wolf” off the second Danzig album. It was fitting that Eerie, being a huge Elvis fan, closed the set with a drunken cover of “the wonder of you,” a song by Elvis Presley played on the King’s birthday who would have been 75 years old. Eerie continues to play music. His most recent album “kinda country” was released in 2009 on Ghastly Records and he continues to make paintings and Fiend Art which he sells on the internet. Check out the video below of Eerie and the crew performing “Killer Wolf” at Generation Records.

Lucy Kaplansky at the Outpost in the Burbs in Montclair-NJ

January 11th, 2010 by Planet Chocko

Lucy Kaplansky in Montclair. Pic by Mr C
Lucy Kaplansky performed at the ‘Outpost in the Burbs’ in Montclair, NJ on January 8th, 2010. She folked out to her 17 song set much to the audience’s delight! Lucy never plays with a pre-determined set in mind. Instead, she chooses her songs based on spontaneity, & with a little power of suggestion from her fans by request. Her performance was truly an angelic experience with the venue being housed at the holiest of holiest of places, the Church, how fitting! Lucy began her sermon with a cover from John Gorka,”Blue Chalk” & ended the night with a song by Bruce Springsteen, “Thunder Road”. The songs sandwiched in between where like fruits freshly picked from the vine, glistening from the morning dew, & hand fed to us! Lucy’s style is fundamentally american folk with a slight shade of country at times. Her voice is very clear, precise, and very soothing. However, she struggled with hitting the high notes at times. Although, the last 2 times I’ve seen her she seemed to be sick from a cold. Lucy is a great performer & storyteller to boot. She plays the acoustic guitar with much rhythm, grace, & continuity. Lucy plays the piano with much eloquence as well, witnessed by her great rendition of Leonard Cohen’s ‘Hallelujah’, the Beatles ‘Let it be’, & her own song “Brooklyn Train” that night. Her lyrics often tell the tale of her childhood days all the way up to her adulthood years with her 2 loving parents in mind. Another tremendous inspirational piece to Lucy’s songwriting seems to be New York City. She often describes ‘the village’, Macdougal street, Bleeker street bars, the subways, life in the city, & the New York folk scene in the most descriptive of ways that truly tranforms into real life when you hear the lyrics. The most recent albums “Ten Year Night”, “Red Thread”, & the latest “Over the Hills” contains the 2 most treasured of her inspirations to date, her husband of 25 years & Molly, her adopted child from China. You hear less of rodeos, cowboys, lost loves, bleeker street bars, & macdougal-west 3rd street enclaves and more about her loving family in her lyrics of late. Some songs she played that night include Scorpion from ‘Flesh and Bone’, Manhattan Moon, Ten year night, Ring of Fire(Johnny Cash), This is Home, By way of sorrow from ‘CRY CRY CRY’, Guinevere from her 1st album “The Tide”(one of my faves), & Someday soon (another fave) which was ironically sung by request from a young girl about 7 years old sitting right next to me, known to her as the song about the rodeo. Great request & great ears, young lady! Kaplansky also sang some new songs including ‘Mothers day’, ‘when you love someone’, & ‘Life Threads’ which was inspired & requested by the beauty care company, La Prairie who hired Lucy to write a song about their new upscale & seductive fragrance line called Life Threads. By request from a fan in the audience, Lucy played the most requested song at her shows to her surprise, a tune written by her father about the mathematical number “Pi”. “Pi” was inspired by her mathematical genious father, Irving Kaplansky who also was a very good piano player & composer who liked to write songs to the tune and scale of mathematical influences. Lucy sang ‘Pi’ in acapella in loving memory of her father with the scale and notes of the mathematical number of 3.1415926535897 in mind!
Lucy Kaplansky is one of my favorite musicians to listen to when I want to pick myself up when I’m down, or when I just want to mellow out. For me, Lucy Kaplansky is quintessential New York City and totally synonymous to what we Planet Chocko inhabitants call the ‘Motherland’. The motherland was a half mile radius with the center being 4th & Broadway where we rooted ourselves in for our days exploration of the City. This area included Tower Records, Tower Clearance, Tower Books, Kim’s Underground, Other Music, Dojo, Washington Square Park, the great Bottom Line venue, Time Cafe, Alt Dot Cafe, The Continental, Coney Island High, CBGB’s, ABC No Rio, Brownies, The Collective, & the Nuyorican Poet’s Cafe. My greatest memories of the motherland to date include watching Richie Havens & Lucy Kaplansky perform at the Bottom Line & Time-FEZ Cafe among the Ramones & other favorite shows at The Continental & Coney Island High. Check out Lucy Kaplansky live when you get a chance if you like folk music & if you love NYC. Lucy encompasses those two attributes pretty darn well! Who knows, you might run into her in the “Motherland”! She’s definitely in the ‘hood! Oh!, almost forgot, Lucy mentions that she is working on a future project that is similiar to “Cry Cry Cry” , but with different artists! She couldn’t mention who because it’s top secret for now, but lookout for the lowdown soon! Lucy is also hoping for a new solo album out this Fall! Go Go NYC & thank you Lucy!

Alice Smith at Rockwood Music Hall

January 9th, 2010 by Planet Chocko

Alice Smith @ Rockwood Music Hall 1/7/10 pic by MR. CAlice Smith @ Rockwood Music Hall 1/7/10 pic by Mr. C

Alice Smith made an impromptu performance at the Rockwood Music Hall in NYC on January 7th, 2010! We knew that she had a residency at Joe’s Pub with several performances already booked in the month of January at Joes, but the show at Rockwood was a pleasant surprise. It seems that Alice Smith & team are really starting the new year with a kaboom by promoting her new material! Great for us! She delighted the crowd with her cool breeze vocals, a hybrid mix of jazz & soul with a little bit of everything mixed in between! It’s apparent from her debut album, ‘For Lovers, Dreamers, and Me that she is influenced by country, rock, jazz, & soul. You even get a tingle sensation of the islands with an inkling of reggae from a track off her 1st album. Alice, yo…bum rushed the show by immediately singing some new tunes that I presume will be on her sophmore album. Some new songs included “Break”,”Go”, & “Martha”. Alice also moved the crowd by playing some older songs like ‘Love Endeavor’ & ‘Hey..Yeah’. Alice also sang a Bonnie Raitt cover, ‘Have a Heart’ & a cover from Band of Horses “No one’s gonna love you”.
I really enjoyed watching her perform at Rockwood Music Hall. If you think Joe’s Pub is an intimate setting then Rockwood will blow your mind. The size of Rockwood is probably the size of middle america’s living room space. The acoustics, shoulder to shoulder rubbing, & enormously efficient bar maiden give this sardine can feeling-performance space, it’s own character & style! The performers are practically sitting on your lap from every viewing vantage point at the ROCK! It’s apparent that Alice Smith was having oodles of fun onstage at the Rock that night! Baby-WowoWhoa!..her waves of energy really bumped the crowd & her vocals tend to make you smile! Can’t you picture Chow Yun Fat better known as Inspector Tequila, play his sax alongside Alice Smith? Sorry for the ‘HardBoiled’ reference, I couldn’t resist!

Enjoy some live music & get yourself a rusty nail at the ROCK!

Check out Alice Smith below perform a new song called “Go” at the Rockwood Music Hall!

DEATH FIRST

January 8th, 2010 by Planet Chocko

Death First is a female-fronted hardcore punk band from NYC who have been playing all over the city the last couple of months after the release of a recently recorded demo. Their songs are fast, fueled by anger and the lyrics are smart and sung by one pissed off girl. Stand back! Check ’em out at a punk rock venue near you and be sure to buy their music. Here’s an interview with the band. Thanks to Jessy (vox), Dan (guitars), Joe (Bass) and Jake (drums) for answering some questions!

what inspired you to be in a band?
Jessy: If I don’t scream at the top of my lungs for at least an hour a week I start to come unhinged.
Dan: wanting to finally make music that i would want to listen to.
Joe: dissatisfaction w/ spectator sports. move beyond mere consumption of punkrock culture, a step everyone should take, and rightfully can. create, yknow.
Jake: anger, frustration, and a love for punk rock. you know, the usual.

what other bands were you all previously in?
Jessy: Go ape shit! And carnal knowledge
Joe: some broward county skids of the apocalypse; currently in a experimental band called SSSS based around nyc.
Jake: i was in a ska/crust band called Aberrance from westchester. I am currently also in Ashtray Dirt, vegan straight edge sludge, and various other projects.

tell us a little bit about your new demo.
Dan: the first tape was recorded in one day back in june, we were all pretty psyched with how it came out and got some good feedback which was really helpful for continuing on and writing new songs. our new 7″ will be out the end of march.

where did the inspiration for the lyrics come from?
Jessy: The simplest answer to that question is that I write about things that piss me off. But I also try to take personal experiences and connect them to a larger political context. Recently I’ve also been using lyric writing as a way to process my thoughts about subjects that are affecting myself and my community. I feel that this acknowledges the complexity of confronting difficult issues such as intimate partner violence.

who are some bands you enjoy listening to at the moment?
Jessy: Some of my favorite bands are bikini kill, submission hold, harum scarum, the dicks, poison idea, anti product, rudimentary peni, detestation and spitboy. Recently ive also been listening to alot of condenada, schifosi, death rats.
Dan: on any given day while im out walking dogs ill listen to From Ashes Rise, The Measure [sa], Hiretsukan, Dillinger Four and Pisschrist.
Joe: naked city / ahleuchatistas / wrangler brutes / the ex / evangelista
Jake: i have been listening to fireworks, title fight, grimple, 25talife, darkthrone and gather recently.

what can we expect from DEATH FIRST in the near future?
Jessy: Records, tours, making the hc scene a little less dude dominated.
Dan: records, tours, general destruction.
Joe: tour! / van-surfing teenwolf-style / / more thrash!
Jake: new music, lots of shows and tours coming soon. see you in the pit!

Drunken Monkey

January 6th, 2010 by Planet Chocko

The Master Killer & The Shaw master Director!

The Master Killer & The Shaw master Director!

Wu Jing going Ape Shit!

Wu Jing going Ape Shit!

Drunken Monkey is a period piece Kung Fu flick depicting the 1930’s era in China. The film was released in 2003 which was directed by Lau Kar Leung, one of the legends of the Shaw Brother studio orchestrators of the past. He directed such classics such as the 36th Chamber of Shaolin, Legendary Weapons of China, 8 diagram Pole fighter, & Shaolin Mantis. Some of you new schoolers might have recognized his work in Drunken Master II with Jackie Chan in the 90’s. Drunken Monkey stars Lau Kar Leung, Gordon Liu(real life adopted brother of Lau kar Leung), & Wu Jing(classmate of Jet Li). This movie was marked as a throwback to a classic period piece Kung Fu movie of the past, which I partially agree with. The film is about a proprietor of a respected delivery company played by Lau Kar Leung who discovers his younger brother addicted to opium. Lau Kar Leung, a master of his art of the Drunken Monkey Fist was then ambushed & ousted by the brother & other evil constituents in order to take over the business & thrive in the opium industry. Lau Kar Leung was left for dead, presumed drowned, but the old Shaw Master somehow survives the ordeal & takes refuge with an adopted daughter. The story starts to materialize when 2 youngsters in search of a teacher happens upon the Drunken Monkey master. Wu Jing’s character finally meets this famed teacher & the rest is history. The detective, played by Gordon Liu pops up in the story when he discovers that his righteous hero & friend, Lau Kar Leung is still alive. The evil empire soon discovers this & the game is on. The master killer, Wu Jing, Shaw Master director, & the daughter soon find themselves in a rumble with the Opium gang! I won’t tell you the conclusion to this because you martians should appreciate the film for yourselves! Mr. C gives the movie 6 out of 10 ‘Shiao Baos’-‘Steamed Roast Pork Buns’ . The quirkyness & comedic stuff in the beginning of the flick was least desirable for me, but the Kung fu action is top notch! Lau Kar Leung showed a life like Monkey Fist, with rolling, & acrobatics to boot. The fighting spirit & choreography was off the meat rack! We all know that the acrobatics of Lau Kar Leung in the movie was done by a stunt double, but the fighting choregraphy was done by no other. With the addition of great martial artists in the film like Wu Jing & Gordon Liu, it’s no wonder the kung fu movements were transferred to the screen like eye candy with such ease! My only other dislike of the film was that the film speed seemed to be increased in the fight scenes. This really bothers the heck out of me! If you have the horses, talent,& spirit of such actors such as the master killer, Wu Jing, & Lau Kar Leung, why do you need to increase the frames per second? The throwback kung fu action is being delivered by seasoned veterans, why ruin it by making it more unrealistic with advancing the frames. May buddha bless you, Donnie Yen does the same shit! The Yen man has extraordinary skills in all 3 elements of HK cinema with his marksmanship in kung fu, directing, & acting. For buddha sakes, you don’t need to speed up the frames & use so much wire fu if you have the stallions already in your stable! Just a rant, y’all! Check out ‘Drunken Monkey’ at your nearest bootleg enclave! The 3 actors in this film should say it all!

A View From The Bridge

January 4th, 2010 by planetchocko

IMG_0243
Once in a blue moon, I’ll check out a Broadway play. The main reason is the cost and parking around Times Square is definitely a hassle. But on a Sunday matinee and for under $40, I was down to see Scarlett Johansson’s Broadway debut in Arthur Miller’s “A View From The Bridge.” The play takes place in the 1950’s and involves a Brooklyn dock worker Eddie Carbone, played by Liev Schreiber, who’s got da hots for his 17-year-old niece Catherine, played by Scarlett. Eddie Carbone is a hard-headed man who is married and has been raising his orphaned niece and putting her through school while putting food on the table and providing a roof over his family’s heads. However, the drama begins once Catherine falls in love with an immigrant from Italy. Mix obsession with a little bit of desire, some jealousy and a dash of desperation and let the games begin. The play is in two acts and lasts for about two hours. The acting is top notch. I totally dug Scarlett’s Brooklyn accent for her role. I’ve been a fan since her acting in the movie “Ghost World” and more recently the work she’s done with Woody Allen. Great stuff. When the play was over, Scarlett came out into the freezing cold totally bundled up, but she seemed really nice and signed everybody’s playbills. Liev did as well and chatted briefly with the fans that waited in the cold. A View From The Bridge will be playing at the Cort Theatre (138 W. 48th St.) until early April. I liked it a lot and I would probably go see it again!

Holmography pics

January 3rd, 2010 by Planet Chocko

I finally developed a few sample rolls of the 120 film in 4×4 format that I took using my Holga camera on my trip to Hong Kong last April. The Holga is basically a bulky plastic toy camera which was ironically made in Hong Kong in the 1980’s! This beast of a camera takes photos in lo-fi quality & focuses the attention of the beholder in old school fashion. Instead of worrying about megapixels & taking pics like a frantic papparazzi freak with digital access, I focus my attention on the subject at hand to blend myself into their world. This really strips down photography to its basic core which let’s me concentrate on getting the right shot on documenting life as it transforms right in front of me. Also, something of note is that when I whip out the Holga to take pics, people seem to be less intimidated by the camera & therefore, continue with their actions like you’re not there which allows me to take more spontaneous pictures as opposed to a rehearsed shot. The wide lens & lack of zoom on the Holga also makes you get closer to your subject. Notice some of the imperfections of the holga camera with light leaks that lead to some pictures that are overexposed which adds a bit of character to the print. Also, check out the black edging or vignetting on some of these pics. The quirkyness & unpredictability of this camera brings the fun back to photography!
A big shoutout to B&H photo on 34th st. in NYC for not filing my 120 film prints in the round filing cabinet. I dropped off my 3 rolls of film in September & did not pick them up till today! Looks like B&H photo outsources their 120 film developing to Photo Station in Brooklyn & C-Labs in Manhattan.

Dar Williams at Southpaw in Brooklyn-NYC 12/27/09

Dar Williams @ Southpaw's in Brooklyn on 12/27/09

Dar Williams came out with guns blazing through brooklyn on her ubiquitous southpaw stance & delivered a heavy hitting set with a hippie inspired knockout performance at Southpaw’s in the Park slope section of Brooklyn on the Sunday after xmas of 2009! It’s always a great pleasure watching Dar perform with her amazing melodies while she plays her guitar with such great ryhthm & folk style. She truly is an amazing songwriter, performer, & storyteller. Watching her sing at such an intimate venue in acoustic fashion was awesome! For me, it’s a self help-holistic, feel good, cleansing session of the heart when she performs onstage! She hypnotized the crowd at Southpaw’s despite having an incident in the dressing room while getting ready for the show by grabbing the wrong end of the curling iron! Ouch! Well, it didn’t affect her performance one bit! Dar’s TKO 19 song set included fan favorites such as the Christians & the Pagans, As cool as I am, Mercy of the Fallen, Spring Street, the easy way, & February. The audience wanted to hear ‘After All’ & one of my Dar faves ‘Iowa’ , but she never got the chance to play it on her set. The standout songs that the audience went wild for while clapping & singing along to were ‘As cool as I am’, ‘Christians & the Pagans’, ‘When I was a boy’ & ‘its alright’ which closed out the night. My personal favorites on her set were ‘Mercy of the Fallen’, ‘You are Everyone’, & a nice rendition of Stephen Trask’s song, ‘Midnight Radio’. She wrote & dedicated a sweet song to her friend, Rachel who lost her battle with life. Dar also paid tribute to free speech radio & in particular to WBAI, your peace & justice community radio station at 99.5 FM in NYC by playing ‘Are you out there’ . All in all, the messages that Dar delivered that night were of peace & love, read the ‘Green Metropolis’, support your local free speech radio, save the democratic party, support the local farmers market anarchist , grow more tomatoes in your garden when babies are blooming instead of car pooling to Costco to purchase items by the pallet, stand up & protest to our government when we are not getting due process of law, & most of all, question the questions from our politicians. Thanks to our favorite hippie chick for such a great performance! We can’t wait to see you again in acoustic fashion! By the way, if you martians haven’t had the chance to witness Pete Seeger’s 90th Birthday celebration live in Madison Square Garden on May 3rd, 2009, you can view it on PBS. Dar’s performance was amazing! The finale with all the Artists including Pete Seeger singing “We Shall Overcome” & “This Land is Your Land” was bone chilling, goosebump enthralling, & most of all, inspirational! Richie Haven’s performance of “Freedom” was off the meat rack! It really brought back archived memories of Woodstock ’69 on video when Richie opened up the big Woodstock celebration on last second notice when the original opening acts were late because of the crazy traffic getting to Yasgur’s farm! Richie Haven’s is pure americana! Let’s celebrate Freedom! Damn, wonder how one of those dashiki’s would look on me?
