2011 Mermaid Parade at Coney Island U.S.A.
June 21st, 2011 by chocko
Last weekend marked the 29th Annual Mermaid Parade at Coney Island in Brooklyn. The parade on Surf Ave. and the Boardwalk is a tribute to the long forgotten Mardi Gras celebration which took place in Coney Island from 1903 to 1954. The parade of mermaids, pirates, freaks, antique cars and ocean creatures marks the beginning of summer and is an excellent excuse to get out of the cave and enjoy the boardwalk and the beach. The glittery floats, elaborately costumed scallywags, and scantily clad harlots always brings a smile to the most jaded beachgoers! The Cyclone, the NYC landmark wooden roller coaster which has been looming over the boardwalk since 1927 is a must and while you’re there, fill up your belly with the best hot dogs and fries in NYC at Nathan’s Famous, Paul’s Daughter or the many other places to eat. Have a fun and safe summer! Check out the photos by Chocko and the the photo slideshow by Mr. C.
